is it cheaper in the long run to just buy the local bundle that has the converted unit plus games, or is it better to buy abroad? My friend from Japan is coming home and he suggested he get one for me there (which supposedly costs less) and just have it converted here.

which is option is more cost-effective?

From what I could tell when I was there, it's a heck of a lot cheaper in Japan. About 50% of the retail cost here in the Philippines. I bought mine modded here though, because I hadn't made up my mind about getting the Wii until very recently. That said, I'm not entirely sure how the modding process works with a Japanese model, because the ones you would buy in e.g., VMall, are all US versions.

^ i was wondering about the modding process as well, in terms of cost and risk. if it's safe and cheap, i'm gonna get one from Japan.

There is some risk involved, but still worth taking. Some of the newer games will not play on a modded Wii; but at least you have quite a few good knockoff games to enjoy. The Wii Fit also works with a modded wii. On the other hand, big brain academy and cooking mama works only on unmodded systems. Ghost squad works, but can occasionally freeze up.

^ so if i get a japanese wii, should i head on over to greenhills to have it modded? i', concerned that they'll mess it up and stuck with a broken wii with no warranty.
